Need examples (and maybe a designer) for fast loading image heavy WP sites.

Does anyone have any examples of image-heavy Wordpress sites using Genesis and a child theme - that load fast. Need some ideas (and possibly a designer) for a travel site that would be designed as a full static site with drop down menus and pages in Wordpress but would also include a blog component. I'm not convinced Wordpress is the way to go for a full blown site based on the load speeds I'm seeing everywhere. Any help greatly appreciated.
