Need Help with High School Website

So here is my plan for a high school website serving approximately 1900 students and 100 staff. I would love comments, suggestions, and questions. Is this a workable plan? What plugins do I need?

1. WP multisite with the main site containing basic information about the school

2. One portion of the overall site would be a commons area using BuddyPress that would allow student/staff/class discussion groups, information, news, calendars, etc.

3. Each teacher/staff member could, at their option, have an additional site beyond their BuddyPress presence

4. Affiliated groups, such as sports and music boosters, would also have additional sites

5. Everything would run on Genesis but I would like to be able to have a variety of child themes available with a common login across all the sites and similar UI features
