Premise - what does it do?

I own premise, I bought it on a launch promotion to save some money. Now I'm getting ready to start using it. In the interest of getting the most out of it, could someone explain to me what premise accomplishes for me that I couldn't do by just publishing a stand-alone page within WP as part of the main site? Thanks to all who care to comment.
