Optimal Image File Sizes

My site has a lot of images, potentially galleries, and I would like to know what size in KB (and dpi if necessary) I should make them to still have a fast loading site. A lot of the images are connected in series but I could split them up into posts if there is a certain number of recommended images on one page.

In addition, what file size should the header logo be for optimal loading time?
