Sub Categories

I would like to have sub categories like the Lifestyle theme offers. I tried to replace the header.php code with code offered here in another post but it did not work. Is there more to sub categories than just the header.php code? How do I get the option to choose a sub category when creating a post? I can take the code from LifeStyle I just do not know what to take.
