Pages in Featured Category Section on homepage

I would like to put pages instead of posts in the top left featured section on the homepage. They wouldn't change very often and I would like to change them manually. I would also like to have a thumbnail image with them just like the posts. Can this be done. I'm assuming I need to change some code in the home.php but don't know what exactly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
