Stupid Newbie Question

Hi,

1. Looking for clarification on widgets. Are all of the sidebars on the blog page widgets? For example: "Blogroll", "Archives", "Admin" etc... are these widgets that are customizable?

If I did not want a "Blogroll" for instance, could I just put in any other widget of my choice in this sidebar (if sidebar is the correct term) such as a Text Widget - or whatever?

2. Also wondering how to get a link in the navbar if that link is actually another site. For example, lets say I want to have a link titled "Members" in the navbar but the link would open a page that is not on the same domain? It might be a sub-domain or pointing to a directory on the site that is not Wordpress ie. a different CMS script that located in a directory off of the root domain name.
