I'm sure I'll see it in the end, but right at the moment Genesis just looks very complicated compared to building or tweaking a traditional WP theme!
I've read through all the tutorials but somehow it's not sinking in. For example. In "old" WP - if I wanted to display a chunk of text before the main content on the homepage only I either created a specific homepage template or I added a bit of PHP to the page template with "if (is_home() ) - text here" All nice and simple and took about two minutes - changes in one place. I'm not seeing how to easily repeat this in Genesis. I tried adding the usual php in the Simple Hooks box for before the content - but that didn't work. I've looked at the home.php template but there's no actual HTML in there just reference to hooks etc. I'm not sure I understand why there's no actual HTML in the home.php template? Am I right in thinking that to get something like this to work I'd need to create a new function and possibly a new hook and then possibly refer to that function in the template file... If I wanted a chunk of text or a slideshow script to appear would that all need to be in the function file if it wasn't in a widget? All seems much more complex than simply adding a single line of PHP to a template. I'd really appreciate someone setting me straight on this! |
