Opening pages in windows

Hello;

Does setting the hyperlink to open in new window for onsite links have a negative effect on SEO? I was told to never open onsite links in a new window; however, when I am reading an article I link this because I can read the other page and go right back to where I was reading. This is especially true on Wikipedia when there are 1,000 hyperlinks in the long articles.
