Default Upgrading Wordpress and Genesis

Hello,

I have a Studiopress web site running with an old version of Wordpress (3.2.1) and an old version of Genesis (1.7.1). My web host has sent me notice that an upgrade is available for Wordpress. Is it better to upgrade Wordpress though my web host's control panel, or through the Wordpress dashboard?

Also, I have "Enable Automatic Updates" checked. In Genesis Theme Settings, it does not show there is an update available for Genesis. Do I have to upgrade Wordpress before that will show?

Thank you!
