Default Using staging vs. dev site

I was wondering the wisdom of having a staging site on my domain vs. just developing my site locally. I currently have a dev server locally and, also, a staging site. I see advantages for both and maybe not entirely the disadvantages of each. Staging is good for support (thanks andrea_r for the last fix) and dev is great for trying things out (configuring local server and WP site developing.) The question I have is whether my SEO with get hosed having duplicate content. I have Privacy turned ON in the Staging site, but I'm not sure if the search engines really always follow the robots.txt file. Thoughts..

Thanks in advance..
