how do I add my own avatar but exclude that from others using it?

Default how do I add my own avatar but exclude that from others using it?
I want to add my own image as author on my Balance Theme blog

How do I do that?

I've uploaded an image of myself labelled avatar.jpg but haven't managed to get any further than that
