Default Differentiate a Menu Item

is there an easy way to have a menu item be set up with some space between it and the other menu items -- to sort of differentiate it from the others? -- or perhaps just add a different colour to it's background (individualize it's CSS)
or are the nav bars somewhat rigid with regard to customization

or the alternative would be to hardcode / insert a menu onto the NAV or PAGE bar (which i believe would mean editing the header file) -- not quite that CSS savy yet - but i'd like to know what my options are

thanks in advance / steve
