Best sandbox/dev practice

Jus wanted to get some feedback for the best and easiest ways to build a wordpress/genesis sandbox/dev site. I can build it in a sub directory and then push it over but then I have to go through and look for every place I hard coded images or links in the dev site to make sure they are all re-directing properly after the move.

I am sure there is an easier/better way to do this.

Thoughts?
