Default Adding alt text to theme

Hello;

I have a banner and two pictures in my theme that don't have alt text. They show on every page and post and I wonder if going in and adding the alt="keywords"> will be of benefit? If so how do I access the html for the sidebar and banner?

Thanks,

John
