SEO and photos

I was told my page speed was low so I am tweaking a few things. I am using the Backcountry theme.
I was told that when embedding photos:
890 width is the absolute highest you can go when you do not have sidebars.
570 width is the highest you can go when you do have sidebars.
Otherwise it slows down page speed and hurts in SEO

Is that true or could I go with 1024 width without sacrificing either.
