Author box excerpt or character limit

I'd like to start using the genesis author box feature at the end of posts. However, I use author page templates and some of my authors have very wordy profiles. Is there a relatively quick and easy code string that I can implant in the php file to do that?

(This is related to a recent forum topic answered by Nick but since I'm now taking the topic in a different direction, I thought it best to start a new topic.)
