Default How to limit the word-count of the "thumbnail" texts

Hi, because I've altered the font-size and letter spacing properties, I'm seeing a bit of text run underneath my thumbnail images on my main page (http://tiffanyholmes.com/). Can someone advise me as to how to limit the number of words or characters in the text from the blog entry that shows next to the thumbnail text.

I thought I had found it on the home.php page here:

"<?php the_content_limit(400, "[Read more]"); ?>"

I tried substituting numbers like "100" for the "400". Was I on the right track or not?

Thanks!
