I have been asked about that, too. That's a very special-purpose type of thing, and I even wonder if that's a good task for WordPress, period. Of course, directories can be a lot of things, and it depends on what you need.I've shopped around inconclusively, and I also found that many of them seemed to be pants. ๐
There seem to be 2 basic approaches - giant themes that are made for this purpose, and plugins. One giant popular one I just looked at isn't responsive, for instance. Since I'm a theme builder, I suppose I would try the plugin route first so I could control the look and layout, be sure it's responsive, and so on. There's this WPMU one, it looks interesting.
But that is a tricky question, indeed. You could also search under "portals" to see what might emerge.
Good luck!

Anything "directory" tends to be massive. Massive often translates to unwieldy, possibly buggy, and usually not overly flexible to modify. It's like the dreaded Joomla (sorry to curse in a public place!)... lots of features to impress those who like quantity, but extremely confusing, and as nimble as a drunk hippopotamus.I think if someone came to me for a particular type of directory now, I might go the Custom Post Types route, and template them. If one needed visitor entry and edit capability, I might go so far as a plugin to help with that.
Cheers, Dave

September 12, 2013 at 8:58 am #62087DannyCuttsMemberI have the vantage theme which seems to be the best I can find... but I am not so sure...
I am in a good position to launch this directory and make a rake load of cash... I already am an authority in the niche ๐
I am just looking for perfection ๐

I try not to over complicate things.....

You can hang out your shingle for that specialty! Maybe I'll be asking you for help on it someday. ๐I did recommend that once to a colleague, the specs sounded good, no idea if she ended up using it. And it's responsive!

I will say this - I've been using Types a lot, and I really, really like it. It has done something difficult, which is to woo me away from my old big fave, Custom Field Template. The interface is great, and for Custom Fields and Custom Post Types, it's just a delight. I haven't needed Views, since I'm geeky, can program, and like to template things, but Views is supposed to be great, and they claim that Types + Views is good for creating directories.

February 7, 2014 at 5:59 pm #89252chillybinMemberI created my own directory using Advanced Custom Fields and Gravity Forms, Gravity Forms has a 3rd party plugin for a directory as well, i've not used it before, I just created everything with templates and custom post types and fields

I bought this for a directory project and used it in conjunction with the Fabric child theme. There have been some bugs, but the plugin author has been very quick to improve (proactively and reactively) the plugin. I've been using it since August 2013 and would recommend it.
