It's been about a year since I converted my site to Genesis and I've been meaning to completely re-vamp it. I've finally completed the project and would love some feedback:
I've been developing with Genesis for roughly 2.5 years nows, but am new to the forums.
Cheers,
Matt

March 6, 2015 at 2:42 pm #143483WhiteleyDesignsMemberMarch 6, 2015 at 6:35 pm #143539tzattaMemberErr..Matt
Can I be kinda negative here?
Now, don't get me wrong, I know next to nothing about designing a website but I know what I like to see.
I love the WD logo. It has a real 'here I am' feel to it, and the way the page loads......It tells me 'Wait till you see the rest!".
But then I have to read 5 boxes of script to understand what you are offering.
The Portfolio Item on the page is Gorgeous..with a capital G.
So as a prospective customer
I wanna be hit between the eyes and want to NEED you.
I wanna say I WANT MY SITE TO LOOK THIS GOOD!!!
So perhaps a "here is what it looked like before you hired me" comparison would be better an option?
Geez, I feel a bit down. I can only imagine the work/hours you put into the site and I come along and pick holes.
But it's my honest opinion for what it's worth...please feel free to disregard.
March 7, 2015 at 9:39 am #143577WhiteleyDesignsMemberI certainly appreciate the feedback and you are definitely entitled to your opinion and I'm open to all opinions.
I disagree with a few things - I think the 5 boxes explaining some of the key things I offer and work with are very important and need to be prominent on the home page.
Thanks for the feedback on the Portfolio section on the landing page, I think it turned out pretty nice. I, personally, don't really care what a site looked like before I worked on it as the finished product is the key. Whether it looked good already and just needed a better code-base, or if it was created from scratch and is a new site, or if it was an ugly site that now looks great doesn't really matter to me in the end-game; I simply want the final product to be the focus.
Thanks for the feedback! I take it all, positive or negative, and try to learn from it!

Designing, Developing & Creating with WordPressMarch 7, 2015 at 7:36 pm #143618tzattaMemberHi Matt
Thanks for the reply. Nice to know you didn't take my criticism as a negative. The last thing I would want is for you to think that I trashed your work. Good job buddy.
March 13, 2015 at 5:00 pm #144337BadlywiredMemberI'm afraid it is hard to read. White on black isn't great and the wood effect through transparent does my eyes in when scrolling. I only put up trying to look at it as I wanted to give you feed back. If I was looking to get a web site designed and saw your sites I would leave in 3 seconds and not come back.
Sorry, but thats the way it made me feel.

March 13, 2015 at 5:15 pm #144345WhiteleyDesignsMemberVery interesting feedback. I've had probably 50+ please give me feedback and readability has not come up once. Plenty of other feedback, positive and negative, but not once has readability been mentioned.
I'm not sure what "the wood effect through transparent does my eyes in when scrolling" means either. It hurts your eyes to scroll the page because there is an opaque box over a wood texture? Again, very interesting feedback and I don't see an issue.
I appreciate you taking the time to look and you're certainly entitled to your opinion. Cheers.

Designing, Developing & Creating with WordPressMarch 14, 2015 at 7:39 am #144385BadlywiredMemberExactly as you say, as I scroll, the 'ripples' of the wood effect cause me an issue with my eyes. Its not an opinion, its a fact.
It may be just an issue with my eyes, as I do have a retina impairment in my right eye.
It creates a blurring effect during the scroll that makes it impossible fro me to scan the text as I scroll the page.
For your benefit, I also tested it on my wife, without prompting her comments were scrolling makes her eyes go funny, like vertico. And (in her words) the colours are horrible.
p.s. why not try http://www.criticue.com/ and get some varied feedback.

March 14, 2015 at 7:59 am #144390WhiteleyDesignsMemberHmmm...guess we'll just agree to disagree. I don't see any type of blurring but you're obviously not making it up, haha. I appreciate you taking the time to look - good thing you won't be looking to me for work since you hate it and your wife hates it!
Good idea on posting on critique, I may do that.
Cheers.

Designing, Developing & Creating with WordPressMarch 14, 2015 at 8:26 am #144392BadlywiredMemberActually I was thinking about chating to you about Genesis build work especially as you put "PSD to Genesis (my preferred plan)", your design skills are not relevant to me, but coding is. If you are not too upset with me, get in contact if you want to discuss build opportunities.

March 14, 2015 at 8:37 am #144393BadlywiredMemberJust to give you some more feedback, I just tested it on my Son & FG (mid 20's) and they didn't get the same issue with their eyes. So this could well be an age thing, where us oldies eyes react differently. Might explain if your 50+ reviews have come from just one demographic.

March 14, 2015 at 8:43 am #144394WhiteleyDesignsMemberNot mad at all...feedback is feedback...gotta take it all, good and bad.
I'd be happy to talk about working together - shoot me an email if/when you have a chance - [email protected].
Cheers.

Designing, Developing & Creating with WordPressMarch 14, 2015 at 8:44 am #144395WhiteleyDesignsMemberThat would make sense...I tested it on a lot of friends and family and people I do my web-work with, all in the 25-35 demo; so that could be a factor for sure.

Designing, Developing & Creating with WordPressApril 3, 2015 at 5:43 am #146542carolacatMemberI really like it. Customised to the core, showcasing your skills as a designer.
What child-theme did you use?
April 3, 2015 at 5:51 am #146543WhiteleyDesignsMemberThanks for the compliments, much appreciated. I actually create my own child themes for all my projects that basically start as a blank canvas, so it is customized from the ground up.
I have a slightly different approach that doesn't use quite as many hooks/filters for page templates, loop customization, etc... Here is my generic base child theme I typically start with:

Designing, Developing & Creating with WordPressFebruary 22, 2016 at 10:59 am #179615WhiteleyDesignsMemberHey @carolcat - sorry for the VERY VERY slow response. I haven't been on the forums for quite some time. This is a custom theme build from scratch, no child theme.
I'm actually in the midst of re-building it again!
