Genesis Responsive Slider (Executive child theme) does not have a height. I have added it to several child themes. It never works out of the box. Does anyone else have this problem? It is like 29px tall.
I can play with it for like an hour to get it to work like all my other sites, but perhaps someone knows what I am not doing to make this thing actually worth using?April 28, 2013 at 7:18 am #38200
Figured it out. My featured image size was not in the theme function.php. Slip of the hand!April 28, 2013 at 6:44 pm #38319
I'm a novice/hobbyist and am trying to get responsive slider to work in Outreach. I can't get it to work. Here's what I'm doing:
1. Create a post and give it a title
2. Put an image in the post (use size 1026 X 400 and set responsive slider for that pixel size, although it's a bear to get other photos to the exact same size--keep getting 1026X399 or 1027X400. It's driving me crazy).
3. Tag the post 'featured'
4. Set the slider to use 'posts'
5. in Taxonomy and Terms, select Tag 'Featured'
6. Update and go...
1. Do the pictures all have to be exactly 1026 X 400 or can they be slightly under those sizes?
2. I can't get any other pictures exactly that size (I figured it'd be easier to do so), can I use pictures that are 1026 X 399?
Either way, I set the slider settings, drop the widget in 'Home Featured' widget area, and I get nothing.
And, I'm such a novice, that I don't know how to check the 'featured image size' in the theme function.php.April 28, 2013 at 6:46 pm #38320
I need a link to your site. I am happy to help you.April 28, 2013 at 6:52 pm #38321
I would like to add some advice on photos, though I doubt the size of your photo is the problem you are having. I won't know till you send me a link, but you should know these basic things about your photos...
You can use a 12,000 x 12,000 photo. The site will resize it with php. This is set in the functions.php. Each theme has a preset size for thumbnails, featured photos, etc... depending on where the site intends to use the photo. You can go in and add extra support for other sizes of photos if you really like a particular size. Anytime you upload a photo, wordpress will give an option of the size you put in the functions.php
So no, the size of your photo is not a big deal; however, I personally like my photos to be the perfect size so that I don't get distortion from php resizing. It does happen.
You have probably tried to reduce the size of the photo while keeping the integrity. That means you can never get the perfect height x width, right? The way you go about doing this in web design is to resize the photo then crop off a little of the height or width.
When you give me a link I will check your slider.April 28, 2013 at 6:56 pm #38323
It's almost more of a sandbox for me to figure this mess out.April 28, 2013 at 6:58 pm #38324
i found the featured image size in functions.php. I changed my slider settings to match: 1040 x 400. I just created two posts w/ two pictures in the posts, 'featured' was the tag and tried to set the slider in the widget. I have a feeling there's something really easy I'm missing.
And Thanks for offering to help.April 28, 2013 at 7:07 pm #38326
I know the problem =)
Go to the page you added the photo to. You don't put the photo on the page then tag the page "featured." On the right side of the screen (when in admin - edit page) there is a "featured image" link at the very bottom. You click featured image, upload the file, then it will appear for you. Let me know if that fixes it.April 28, 2013 at 7:12 pm #38327
I was using posts... should I create pages instead? And as far as the taxonomies and terms, etc. do I need to do something in that part of the slider settings to point the slider to the correct posts or pages?
I removed the pictures from the posts and uploaded them as featured images, and it doesn't seem to have worked yet. i"m about to send you my password 🙂April 28, 2013 at 7:14 pm #38328

You can use either posts or pages in your slider. You choose in "slider settings" whether to include posts or pages, and you chose what to include (or exclude) from the slider based on either terms, or page IDs.
I removed the pictures from the posts and uploaded them as featured images, and it doesn’t seem to have worked yet.
When you uploaded them as featured images, did you also chose them as featured images for your post or page? When you go to edit a post/page, do you see a thumbnail of the featured image on the side of your edit screen? Make sure the image shows there, so you know your post has a featured image associated with it.

You're welcome - I wasn't sure if it was resolved. I'll go ahead and close this thread as "resolved".
