I'll start by mentioning that I've only been working with WordPress for a week or two at this point and I am trying to move my portfolio onto a new site and keep up with it more regularly. I'm was also looking to pick up some new skills, as I've done very little with my HTML/CSS know how.
I just purchased the genesis framework and I am currently running off of the sample genesis theme. I have a four page site and a single page for blog posts. I am totally going to butcher this statement by using the most inaccurate of terms, but I will try my best to explain what I'm looking for.
First off, I'm looking to use the blog aspect of my page to show/talk about my work as I create it. I'd like to be able to add an image to the blog post, and write a brief description of whatever is happening with my project at the time of posting. I'd like to be able to "tag(?)" or "categorize(?)" the images themselves somehow as I use them in my blog posts.
I'd like to then have a portfolio page that is capable of dynamically updating itself whenever I post something new to my blog and include an image. Ideally I would like to categorize these images as I post them with terms like "draft", "sketch", "portfolio" and the like. I'd also like to be able to categorize or tag some images or blog posts as non-portfolio material when I update them with terms such as "observation", "work", and "inspiration" for things that I'd exclude from the portfolio.
Further, I would be really excited if I could click on those tags/categories from within the portfolio page to view/hide images that were posted via blog posts by choosing to view only "drafts and sketches" or only "final" pieces. Clicking on these images would create a new window, or a pop up "lightbox(?)" for the image with a brief description, date, and any other short form information. There ideally would also be a link within the "lightbox(?)" to refer back to the original blog post with the longer form verbiage used when adding the image in the first place. These last few features aren't as important, but I feel like they have to de doable by some means.
TLDR: Want to create a smart portfolio page that dynamically updates from blog post images.
Thanks for your feedback. I'm very excited to be working with something different.

You would need to create a Portfolio page, use a portfolio plugin, or buy a Studio Press theme that caters to photography or artwork. It's not clear from your post what your images are.

Have you requested your free website audit yet?August 13, 2015 at 8:03 am #162244Flight2039DownMemberI'm okay with picking up an appropriate theme from studio press to make this portfolio easier to accomplish. I'm simply using the Sample Genesis Theme at the moment to poke around and get an idea of what the framework is like. I know very little about WP itself, so it's going to be a long trip. I'd like to have some features that I can aim toward for my website, but I'm not sure exactly what is possible without extensive development knowledge.
These images would be portfolio pieces. Maybe some banner/ad for a site, the outline of a particular area of a wordpress page I've worked with, or most likely different typography and logo designs. Not every image I add to the blog would ideally be appropriate for the portfolio, but I'd like the ability to categorize and filter the ones that are so they are added to the portfolio without a lot of duplicate work.

Ideally, you want to be looking for a plugin to do this for you. A plugin, because it is part of your content, which stays the same no matter what theme is used.
