I have a project for a client that needs to have a gallery page which has a grid of featured images and some fields from a custom post type that represents a full gallery of images from the event. The featured image will link to the gallery page which contains the full image gallery, also as a grid. Over time more galleries will be added, so I don't think using widgets will really work in this case.
Can this be done with a variation of the portfolio CPT's in Genesis themes? Or can someone point me in a good direction for a better way to do this in Genesis?

You would simply need to redo the category layout to highlight the featured image of each post. Then you would add a gallery to a post, select a featured image and publish. Pretty straight forward.
This plugin would be a good place to start: http://wordpress.org/plugins/genesis-grid-loop/
Alternatively, you might want to do this all using a gallery plugin. Here would be the steps I'd follow.
- Setup a gallery that will serve as the core gallery page. You will add images here that you can link to galleries as you add them.
- Add a new gallery for the event.
- Add event gallery to a post or page.
- Add image to core gallery, link to post or page of new gallery.
- Update core gallery.
This second option would give the client a little more control of order for their gallery links. But it might end up being a little work. If you're looking for a solid plugin, I've found the Envira Gallery to be a really nice gallery plugin that works well with Genesis.

I think I need to use a CPT because I am adding extra field data to each one of the galleries on the main gallery page:
[ GALLERY FEATURED IMAGE ]
Name Of Couple
Wedding Date
Wedding LocationI will probably use ACF for the extra fields that each one of the gallery links needs.
I dont think I want to use another gallery plugin, preferring to use the native wp (even though its limited to some extent) - got burned with a couple of sites running on NextGen.
I'll take a look at the Grid Loop plugin - is it pretty easy to customize it? There doesn't appear to be tons of documentation.

I haven't dug into the tagging conversation you're presenting so I can't say how Envira would handle it. The built in gallery function that WordPress uses is okay, I like more control over my images so I choose to use a gallery plugin.
Take a peek at the Grid Loop plugin. If you have questions, the developer is normally pretty good with support. One of the better guys in the Genesis community.

Ill check out Envira and see if it would work for what I am trying to do. Just skimming, it looks pretty great.
Thanks again!
