I have a client running a site with an exceedingly complex theme built by someone for them a while back. They use WooCommerce as their presentation and transaction engine. I suggested that they simplify their lives by switching to a theme that is not as Byzantine as their current theme. I understand it is very capable but that flexibility comes at a huge price: steep learning curve and still complex structure.
My recommendation was, and still is, that they switch to a StudioPress theme. However, not having any direct experience with WooCommerce plugin, I am not sure if there are certain requirements for the theme to support it. I realize that there are a couple of store-front child themes, but I would like to learn if I could recommend "any" SP theme to them without creating a landmine for myself and for them.
Any direction, suggestion, recommendation will be welcome. Thank you,
Cemal

There are several themes that already have it built in, so to speak, in the list of choices on SP and I believe that all of Restored 316 and other brands of Genesis Child themes have it standard, but you'll need to read carefully.
March 22, 2016 at 7:04 pm #182055ACEkinParticipantThanks carasmo. I downloaded the plugin you mentioned but it seems to be not compatible with the latest version of WooCommerce, the plugin says it is OK up to 2.21 where the latest version of WooCommerce is 2.5.5. I guess I am better off looking at the options that have the support built in. By the way, the plugin indicated that I needed to add a line to the functions.php which I did, no luck. The plugin will not even activate even after the functions.php file is edited as it requested.
I appreciate your direction.

See https://wordpress.org/support/topic/you-theme-contains-outdated-copies-of-some-woocommerce-template-file.
I don't know what tools or what you did precisely, so I can't tell you what is happening. Usually I clear the WP cache after I make an update to the functions.php file, actually I just work locally (ServerPress) with all cache off so I don't have things not working after I make an update situations.

First undo what you have done:
Remove the WooCommerce and the Genesis connect plugins, delete the files too. We're going to start fresh. You won't lose the content in the database.
Turn off your cache and clear it. Turn it back on after you have finished developing.
I work with debug on during production, so this is not giving me any errors.
Next:
Before you install WooCommerce and the Genesis Connect plugin add the following to your functions.php file with a code editor and FTP. Make sure you are well outside other functions (do not paste this inside curly brackets).
/** ==================================================================================== * WooCommerce Support ==================================================================================== **/ add_theme_support( 'genesis-connect-woocommerce' ); add_theme_support('woocommerce');
Then install WooCommerce. Go through the setup procedure, you can skip some steps for later. Then install the Genesis connect plugin. If you want to create your own templates, follow the instructions on WooThemes (it's owned by the same company that made WordPress : Automattic).
There are videos too, but I think they are for user level. You need to learn hooks and the same stuff you need for advanced Genesis layouts if you want to do major reconstruction, but they may have a very expensive plugin that will do it.
March 23, 2016 at 8:10 am #182100ACEkinParticipantCarasmo, thank you very much for the detailed instructions, I will follow them on a new installation and let you know. This is one of the reasons for my wanting to stick with StudioPress themes. Much appreciated.
