Hey everyone I hope things are well.
We're using the Yoast SEO plugin on our site with the Magazine Pro theme. The SEO and advanced functions/options work great.
Unfortunately the plugin breaks our menus on a very frequent basis. If you click a page or category in our menu it will often return something like "content not found" or show a random grouping of posts/pages instead of the intended page. Everything goes back to normal if we deactivate and reactivate the plugin but we get a lot of errors if our site gets crawled when the plugin has broken the menus.
We contacted Yoast for support but since we don't use the premium version of the plugin they won't help. In fact, their solution was for us to upgrade to premium and then ask them for help.
Please pass along any advice or tips you have for fixing this problem. We would prefer to use the Yoast plugin because we like a lot of the features but we obviously can't continue with it if it's not going to perform properly.

Have you requested your free website audit yet?February 20, 2015 at 12:37 pm #141512haerogMember@Christoph: The force rewrite check box is NOT checked. Should we turn that on?
@Victor: Thank you for your advice. Will do that now.February 20, 2015 at 12:41 pm #141513haerogMemberIs it best to have the force rewrite on for an issue like this? We currently do not have the box checked for force rewrite.
February 20, 2015 at 12:57 pm #141517haerogMemberIt may have something to do with the permalinks. Saved the permalinks again and then the menus broke. Deactivated and reactivated the plugin to get the menus to work properly again.
February 20, 2015 at 1:27 pm #141528ChristophMemberI was asking about the force rewrite because I thought there might be a conflict between a caching solution and the yoast plugin rewriting post titles...
Did you add links manually to your menus or selected them through Pages/Categories?
February 20, 2015 at 1:30 pm #141530haerogMemberWe do use w3tc for caching. I was wondering if there was some sort of conflict with the cache and the menu. A few of our menu links were added manually (our phone number in the 'Call Now' for instance) and some are the pages/categories.
February 20, 2015 at 1:33 pm #141533ChristophMemberHave you activated the yoast extension in the w3 total cache extension menu?
February 20, 2015 at 1:41 pm #141537haerogMemberWe have Yoast, cloudflare, genesis, and feedburner extensions turned on in the w3tc extensions section.
February 20, 2015 at 2:01 pm #141542ChristophMemberCan you see a connection between how you set the links and the 404 pages?
Make sure "Redirect ugly URL's to clean permalinks." is de-activated in Yoast - Permalinks?
You could de-activate w3 total cache and see if the problem persists...
February 20, 2015 at 2:08 pm #141544haerogMemberWe have every box checked on the permalinks page except for enforce and redirect ugly.
February 20, 2015 at 3:01 pm #141549ChristophMemberThanks for the shout out on Twitter 🙂
Did you have any luck with the other two ideas?
Could you take a screenshot of the broken menu and the working menu that shows the URL of the link in the bottom left corner of the browser (by hovering over the menu item)?
February 20, 2015 at 3:04 pm #141552haerogMemberOk let me see if I can "break" the menu and then I'll get that info.
I didn't disable w3tc yet. I don't see any connection between the links and the 404 pages but I can look into it more.
No problem with the Twitter shout out. All of the help is much appreciated.
February 20, 2015 at 3:16 pm #141556haerogMemberHere's the image for the broken link. The link in the left-hand corner won't stay visible for the working menu but it's the exact same unless I'm not seeing something properly.
February 20, 2015 at 3:20 pm #141557haerogMemberOk finally got the other picture.
February 20, 2015 at 4:08 pm #141565ChristophMemberDid you try this (post 19)?
https://wordpress.org/support/topic/plugin-wordpress-seo-by-yoast-permalinks-category-base-problemI found the solution ... once you check the "strip category base" and save, go to permalinks and click save. Lets see how long will this hold.
February 20, 2015 at 4:19 pm #141566haerogMemberI unchecked the "strip category base" box and saved. Then re-checked the box and saved. I then went to permalinks and saved again. Menu broke.
I unchecked the "strip category base" box and saved. I then went to permalinks and saved again. Menu is working. So I'm assuming the answer is leave the "strip category base" box unchecked for now? Any other time I would've had to deactivate and reactivate the plugin. Didn't have to do that with the "strip category base" box unchecked.
February 20, 2015 at 4:38 pm #141567ChristophMemberThat's one weird bug in the Yoast plugin...
If the menus stay intact, I´d say leave the "strip category base" unchecked for now.
February 20, 2015 at 4:46 pm #141568haerogMemberOk we'll do. I tested it several times and the menu isn't breaking so this must be the solution (for now). Thanks again for all of the tremendous help today. Appreciate you giving so much time to help. Have a great weekend!!
