Thanks Anita!
HawkeyeParticipantHi Anita,
I'm using Wintersong.
Will try your suggestions.
I did find one prior comment about this issue, but it was never answered:
Comment Moderation Notice is not showing in the New Sample Child Theme
HawkeyeParticipantThank you, Andrea!
I am so used to seeing a search box in the header for every site, or at least somewhere on every page, that it never occurred to me to look on the main page.
(And given that the search box is grayed out to the point of ghosting, I might have missed it even if I did look....)
September 23, 2015 at 8:44 pm in reply to: "Read More" link is not loading full post at 'more' tag #166509HawkeyeParticipantMy bad -- for some reason I misremembered the 'more' link acting like an anchor, but after talking with others that's clearly note the case. But it should! ๐
Marked resolved.
HawkeyeParticipantThanks Ginger -- great link!
It's also no wonder I rarely worry about SEO -- so complicated.... ๐
HawkeyeParticipantOkay -- turns out that this is a plugin-related problem.
The plugin in question is Wordfence, which includes this option:
Hold anonymous comments using member emails for moderation
In WordPress it's possible for someone who is not a member on your website to post a comment and to specify an email address of a real member on your site. This behavior is suspicious and may be incorporated into a more sophisticated attack. So we suggest that you leave this option enabled which will hold those comments for moderation before they're published.
I have been using a 'member' email to reply to comments, but with a different name, so the plugin is actually working as intended. Not a bad feature, actually, but until somebody suggested that I dig into my plugins I had no clue it was even there.
August 1, 2015 at 11:23 am in reply to: Foodie Pro – Comments Disappear/Unable to Post Comments #161139HawkeyeParticipantI looked at your site and I'm seeing plenty of comments.
I have no idea why you aren't/weren't seeing the comments.
HawkeyeParticipantThanks for the reply. Here's what I'm seeing after following your steps. (It's complicated.)
If I turn off all plugins and switch to either the 2014 or 2015 themes, the problems remains.
However, if I then go into WP admin via my login name (upper right corner) and change the Admin Color Scheme to anything other than 'Default', the problem goes away. (There are now eight color schemes showing, where I only previously remember two or four. Also, each of these color schemes includes four different colors, and I don't remember that many before. Maybe it used to be three?)
Anyway, the big difference between the default theme and the seven other options seems to be that the default theme has black or two very dark values as the first two colors, instead of showing two different colors. My guess is that this somehow creates the ghosting I'm seeing, which then disappears when the blue rollover effect occurs.
And here's the complicated stuff....
No matter what change I make in the admin screen, if I then look at my site while still logged in, that change does not affect the bar at the top of the browser page which also shows me logged into the site.
If I change the default color scheme to something that works in the admin panel, then turn on Genesis and my child theme (Wintersong), the same problem returns with the theme enabled, no matter what my default color scheme.
And that's about all I know. ๐
HawkeyeParticipantPerfect. So you're the last-word type, too - and the I-can't-admit-I-blew-it type.
Okay.
I obviously can't speak for anyone else, but I do now get the 'Moody' in your name.
As for flaunting regulations, nowhere did I say that I was going to flaunt any regulations. In fact, I actually said:
I’m more than happy to provide subscribe/unsubscribe links so no one perceives my infrequent emails as a violation of their personhood.
Which still doesn't explain how, by using Feedburner for six years, I've apparently been in non-compliance with these same strident regulations. Along with, apparently, millions of others.
HawkeyeParticipantWow.
Okay.
So apparently I've struck a nerve with a concerned citizen.
Yes, I guess I was cavalierly suggesting that a regulation which almost everyone seems to flaunt -- and Feedburner has been apparently allowing me to circumvent for the last six years -- might not be my utmost concern. I stand corrected.
Not sure where you got 'mass mailings' from, since I didn't say that I wanted to 'mass email' anyone other than people who subscribed on my site, but far be it from me to suggest that a regulatory overlord such as yourself read the entire thread before replying.
And of course those earlier posts/replies also included my interest in doing all this through/with the support of my ISP, so I'm not sure your concern about me acting as a some sort of email terrorist is warranted either.
Still, thanks for dropping in, dashing off a reply, and setting me straight. The world definitely needs more angels like you.
HawkeyeParticipantYou know, the idea that I've got a regulatory cannon stuck in my face because of spammers is more than a little depressing. As is hearing the phrase "you do so at your own risk".
Fortunately, I'm the plucky sort and I don't let a lot of bureaucratic horse**** stand in my way. I'm more than happy to provide subscribe/unsubscribe links so no one perceives my infrequent emails as a violation of their personhood.
I did just find something 'like' Mailman in my Cpanel (It's not called that), so I'm going to see if I can get that to work, either with or without the ENews Extended plugin.
Thanks for all the info. If I get something working I'll follow up.
HawkeyeParticipantBelieve me, I tried Jetpack every way possible but it simply wanted to sink its hooks into too many aspects of my site.
I also did just look at MailChimp, but one of their terms of service was that I needed to include a physical address with each email for some regulatory reason, and there's no address I want or need publicized.
I agree that it seems like more work to do everything manually, but that's why I'm looking for an automated solution that handles basic subscribe/unsubscribe functionality in CPanel. It seems like something someone should have already dealt with (I can't be the only person with this particular interest) but who knows.
In any case, if this continues to be a problem I'll take the truly minimalist approach of junking the email list itself. I'm not sure it's even worth the trouble I'm putting into it now.
HawkeyeParticipantHi Christoph,
Thanks for the reply.
I looked at Jetpack a while back and it too was complete overkill. Even at a minimum it wanted to install all kinds of stuff that I don't need or want, and took a commensurate toll on my site's performance.
(This is a persistent problem with plugins -- W3 Total Cache, WordFence Security -- they all keep adding features until they become more like bloatware than anything else.)
HawkeyeParticipantWell, in my own defense we're talking about modifications that may be four or five or six years old.
I do understand that with Genesis none of that takes place, but if I remember correctly there was a time when modifying original files was necessary. (I have only modified functions.php for the past two or three years at least.)
In any case, it's curious that updating to the newest version of WordPress has never overwritten those files in the WordPress directory. In fact, I'm at a loss to explain how that might have transpired.
HawkeyeParticipantNope...wrong again. LOL
Current version of Genesis (all files 6/10/2015) shows in the Genesis folder on my site.
Sidebar.php in that folder does NOT show the code from Feedburner.
So back to the drawing board on all that.
And yet...Feedburner is still not sending emails which each new post. (RSS feeds works okay.)
!
Okay -- got it now. Here's why I was confused.
On my site I have the main WordPress directory, under which is WP-Content, Genesis and my Themes.
Genesis is up to date, my theme is up to date, and WordPress says it's also up to date, but when I look at the sidebar.php file in the WordPress folder, that's where I see the (old) Feedburner code. The sidebar.php file in my Genesis directory is as it should be, untouched.
So, how can I have an up-to-date install of WordPress that still shows file mods that I made years ago? And is Genesis overwriting those files or not? I would think it must be, but as you can see I'm easily baffled.
HawkeyeParticipantHi Brad,
If I hacked a Genesis file I did so long ago (years ago), when the original theme I was using necessitated such. I cannot find anywhere else that I inputted the Feedburner code, which would then be placing it in sidebar.php, so it really seems as if I must have hacked it, but by the same token the file date is recent, so I'm genuinely confused.
My version of Genesis is up to date, so I would think it would have overwritten any code I added, but the code is clearly there.
I've looked at every widget and setting I can think of and cannot figure out how that code is getting into sidebar.php, but I'll look again.
In any case, thanks for the note about not needing it. The very fact that I can see it means I don't have the ENews plugin configured accurately.
Update: Actually, I'm not sure if Genesis us up to date. In the Theme Settings it says this:
Version: 2.1.2 ยท Released: July 15, 2014
But when I look at the file dates of the actual Genesis files on my site they're from back in February, and probably older than that because I moved my ISP back then. So why wouldn't my Genesis files be updated when my admin panel says they are updated?
HawkeyeParticipantRecently replaced my own facivon.ico and it took FOUR DAYS for the change to show up in my browser, and that's after clearing the cache.
I've seen it take longer, so don't be surprised if there's a lag. If you've got the file itself in the right place, it should take, albeit at a snail's pace.
February 27, 2014 at 1:13 pm in reply to: StudioPress PROSE replaced with PROSE by CS THEMES? #92707HawkeyeParticipantWhether this particular problem is purely accidental or not, it seems to have exposed a potential exploit that could be problematic for a lot of people -- particularly if the most heavily-used SP themes were affected/targeted.
I was a little nervous about allowing automatic updates when they were first initiated, and now as a result of this thread I've turned them off. Does StudioPress/CopyBlogger have a position on this?
Also, when I see that an update is available, how can I make sure that a theme update is coming from StudioPress and not some third party?
Mark
P.S. Regarding the loss of formatting that's being reported, checking your host directory for backups on a file-by-file basis might be worthwhile. I know any time I overwrite a file using FTP that a back-up of the overwritten file is created in the same folder/directory. Worth a look, at the very least.
HawkeyeParticipantThanks Peter -- excellent explanation.
I got about halfway there and tried fiddling with the 24px margin settings to see if that would change how the text was displaying, but I didn't think about <p> being a default block.
I've been using <p style=”text-align:center”> as a workaround but from now on I'll simply treat it as default. (One of my concerns, which you addressed in your previous reply, was that a lot of the old/accepted methods of centering any kind of element have been deprecated. I'm not fluent in HTML5 and CSS3 so I trusted the theme's stylesheet a bit more than I needed to.)
Mark
HawkeyeParticipantThanks for the replies. In looking at my original post I realize I may not have been clear. This CSS rule is already in style.css for the Wintersong theme, and clearly looks as if it's designed to center both images and text:
img.centered,
.aligncenter {
display: block;
margin: 0 auto 24px;
margin: 0 auto 2.4rem;
}I have no trouble figuring out how to center an image with "img.centered", but when I try to center even a few words of text with ".aligncenter" my efforts fail. (I know I'm having severe brain lock about how this is done, and that the answer is going to be absurdly obvious.)
Here's what I'm trying to do:
<p>blah blah blah </p>
<p>blah blah blah </p>
<p>important stuff</p> <--- center using .aligncenter???
<p>blah blah blah </p>
<p>blah blah blah </p>What I can't remember (or figure out) is how to use the rule I already have to center that particular paragraph. When I try <p class="aligncenter">, which I think should work, it fails. Do I need to specifically add "p.aligncenter" as a selector? If so, what is .aligncenter doing there all by itself, and how would it be used in some other way?
