Yeah I guess going back a version is not a good idea. I did an experiment with a site I'm not longer using, deleted everything and reinstalled WordPress and my theme. Didn't install any plugins and the comments worked so it must be a plug-in. The problem is I deactivated every plug-in and comments still aren't working so something evidently got messed up in the database. Is there any way to reset the plugin section of the database without deleting my content and theme customization?
jenniferpinkleyParticipantI see what you're saying now. I actually remembered I have the theme running on another site I haven't updated to the recent version and comments work there so it probably is a WordPress problem. I also activated the Twenty Sixteen theme to see what happened and comments don't work on that either. I guess I'll try downgrading. I found this tutorial, is this process safe to try? http://dominiquej.com/how-to-downgrade-wordpress-to-previous-version/
Also what is the best way to report WordPress bugs? This is a pretty big one. Thanks for your help.
jenniferpinkleyParticipantI'm actually using this theme on three sites and I have made some major changes so no I can't go to a backup. I actually did a clean install on one site and no comments there either. I've also emailed the theme developer to ask for help but thought I'd check here too.
jenniferpinkleyParticipantThat worked! Thank you so much!
jenniferpinkleyParticipantThanks! Do you mean I should edit the styles.css? I'm really paranoid about editing code so just want to make sure I edit the correct file!
jenniferpinkleyParticipantThank you CJWheel!!! I've been pulling my hair out trying to get my comments to work! This fixed my problem.
jenniferpinkleyParticipantOK I fixed my font/color problem and it was easy. I just activated my old theme then activated the theme I actually want to use. That wiped the customization and reset everything. Not sure why the settings were wrong for my first install, but now they're correct. However, commenting is still not working. I've contacted the theme designer for help with that.
jenniferpinkleyParticipantI used the Styles plugin by Paul Clark. https://wordpress.org/plugins/styles/
The fonts are "wrong" because they are retaining my customization from my old theme and not resetting to the theme defaults. The main problem is that blog posts have a large graphic as the header with the blog title overlaid on top of the graphic. In a clean install, the font is large and white and easy to read (h1). On the home page, the title of the blog post is slightly smaller (h2 or h3). In my current install, I can't change the size of the blog post title in the actual blog post (and it needs to be an h1 to be legible) without also changing the size of the blog title on my home page (I don't want h1 tags associated with titles on the home pages because that's way too big). Also, the colors are not displaying the way they should in a clean install (they should display in white when overlaid on text but black when page headings, and I can't get the colors correct). I also cannot get the comments to show up even though I have commenting functionality enabled for blog posts.
Basically I want to know how to wipe the customization. Could I delete all of the themes off of my server and reinstall the theme for a fresh install? Or is customization stored in other locations not associated with themes?
jenniferpinkleyParticipantBut that's my problem, I just installed a whole new theme and it retained the font sizes and colors from my old theme. Or are you saying I need to revert back to my original theme, reinstall that theme, then reinstall my current one?
October 26, 2016 at 6:23 pm in reply to: Author Pro forcing black background on MailChimp signup form #195376jenniferpinkleyParticipantThanks for your response. I don't think this is an error with Mailchimp form creation. I added the same code to another website and the background is white. When I was tweaking the footer for this website (which is black) I'm wondering if something got changed in the css code for the Mailchimp form? What file would I need to edit to fix the color from 181c1e to fff? I looked in the styles.css and don't see it.
jenniferpinkleyParticipantThanks for your response. Yes, I found that already and added the custom code, but the search box still does not appear.
jenniferpinkleyParticipantI did a little more experimenting. I actually do need to add variable products to the other site I'm working on that has been working just fine with simple products. I added a variable product and it broke the cart! Now I'm having the same problems with that site too as with Symmetrical Universe! When i switch to the Twenty Twelve theme, the cart works correctly on all platforms so that indicates to me there is a problem with the Lifestyle Pro theme. Help!
jenniferpinkleyParticipantI just noticed something. I'm setting up another site using the exact same theme and plugins, and the cart work fines on that one with all browsers, phones, iPad, etc. The difference is the site that works does not have variable products. For the site noted above, we want to sell different sizes of artwork so I set up variable products for each item. Why would variable items make the cart not work correctly?
jenniferpinkleyParticipantNo links, just text.
jenniferpinkleyParticipantI just got a site running very well with Genesis and WooCommerce. I used Genesis Connect and Genesis product archive Customiser to get it set up. This free tutorial was very helpful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUyGznSmm2U
jenniferpinkleyParticipantI decided to deactivate all of the Portfolio page plugins except for Huge IT Portfolio. I went to the Huge IT Portfolio section on the left side of the Dashboard and created a new Portfolio option called Articles. I added photos, descriptions, and URLs to existing blog posts. I used the Gallery/Content Pop-up option. Then I created a Page and used the Add Portfolio Gallery button to add my new Article portfolio. I set my page display to full-length like the old Portfolios, but I like that you can also set it to see you right sidebar too. This is what I got: http://discoverhistorictravel.com/test-page-for-articles/ I actually like this more than the old Portfolio options so am going to stick with it. Try that plugin and see if it will work.

jenniferpinkleyParticipantI created a test page and it's working great with Huge IT Portfolio. I'm not using "portfolio" pages at all, I deactivated all of those plugins that are supposed to create Portfolio functionality. I installed the Huge IT Portfolio plugin, went to the Portfolios option on the left side of the screen, created a new Portfolio, and added some images and links to existing blog posts. I used the Gallery/Content Pop-Up option for the display. Then I created a new Page, clicked the Add Portfolio Gallery option and inserted the Portfolio I just created. This is what I got: http://discoverhistorictravel.com/test-page-for-articles/ I actually like this a lot more than the old Portfolio options so I'm glad I decided to give up on fooling around with the code!
jenniferpinkleyParticipantCarol, I decided to think about this a different way and researched gallery plugins, like for setting up an art gallery page. The functionality seems similar to portfolio pages. I just found one that is really easy to install and get working (no coding!). I'm going to play more with this, but I think it will work for me. Look up the Huge IT Portfolio plugin, or search for other "gallery" plugins. It looks like you want to add links to menus, and I think something like this will probably work for you too, with a lot less aggravation.
