I commented out those 3 lines and it looks just the way I wanted.

For my traditional blog, I just didn't like the way the default layout added a click from the front page to read a full post and from there a reader would have to click twice more to read any additional posts. The default just added a lot of friction to a traditional blog.

Okay, I'll leave it as designed for now and see what happens to views, time spent on site, number of comments and especially, number of new subscriptions.
As designed, I think it works better for mobile but less well for desktop/laptop engagement. I'll wait to see the numbers before deciding whether to make a change.

In Settings/Reading set as 'A static page' and selected in 'Posts page' an empty page that I had set page template to 'Blog' and did not select anything for 'Front page.'
Let's see if that works.

I didn't see the upgrade notice in the dashboard so downloaded it as you described and replaced 1.9 with 2.0. The sites look fine. Very smooth. Thanks for your help.
