And really, we're going to stick with this ridiculous downgrade of the forum and support system with these few categories? Even if you insist on offering technical support that other people can't browse for self-solving of problems, what is the problem with you just letting the forums for the child themes exist so people can help themselves, and people can help other people.... What is the desire to downgrade to crappy forum software and how have you not fixed this most colossal failure!?
UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
robthecomputerguyMemberIn the admin area, go to Genesis, Theme Settings, then scroll down to header and uncheck the box.
The logo file to replace is in /themes/eleven40/logo.png
When you change that file, chances are your logo is bigger than the standard space allocated, but if you just edit your CSS you'll be able to arrange it the way you want.
[I was disappointed that un-staggering them was not part of the documentation and I too would like to get that info right away.]
robthecomputerguyMemberI'd like to chime in and say that I have trying to develop a simple internal website for a small company for the past 2 months, and I have tried several different themes from different companies. At the company, most of management will mostly view the website on a phone, many others, iPad. Very few desktop users, but when management sits down at their computer, I can't have it be all wacky.
Without question, the quality of the work that has been put into responsive StudioPress themes are not just better, but they are miles ahead of the quality of the themes available by other major outlets. For example, WooThemes gets it all wrong: they take your navigation menu and put one single item per line in the condensed layout. So on a mobile phone, the "above the fold" area is ALL MENU! But it looks like that's the entry page so you think you have to choose something -- the visitor would have no idea to scroll down to get anything on page 1. And for every other reason I could think of, it's just awful.
I don't disagree with what Nick's saying but if I may say that we need to adjust our approach and reorganize our sites to make sure they look correct on the most popular devices. So if that 3-across block doesn't look right on a tablet, that's a problem you have to solve. Maybe go to 4 across so the tablet display is symmetrical (if that's indeed what you wanted.) If I'm not mistaken, Google Analytics will tell you what browser your visitors are using so if you find out that 90% of your visitors are using a desktop, then you'd be able to make an informed decision about organizing the layout for a particular audience. I believe most websites cater to a tablet audience so we have passed a tipping point where this can no longer be ignored. In one example, Staples automatically navigates you to an alternate site styled to work on a tablet - which is the most work possible, but I think a majority of websites have some stopgap in place to make their websites look as dreamy on a tablet as they do on the desktop.
I've done 2 sites within the past month and the responsive layouts provided by StudioPress have been indisputably superior to the point where I could not justify using any other theme.
It sounds like a burden to test and keep up with this, but soooo much less so with the SP theme.
And Nick, don't give it up so quickly! 🙂
robthecomputerguyMemberYou know we should start a blog of nothing but cool things to do with hooks. I have a feeling 3 posts in, I'd have my mind blown. I am sure I don't know 99% of the creative ways to use them.
I went with StudioPress a long time ago (in blog years) much in part due to hooks but most of what I put in those hooks were eventually handled other ways... I usually do my analytics code in a hook, not much else these days.
Now don't get me started on simple sidebars.... "Simple sidebarssssss.... <homer-simpson-gurgle>" 🙂
Seriously though, I'm sure this can't be done now that the forum software has been downgraded as it has, but it would be awesome to be able to move a thread or copy a thread to a separate "hooks" thread.
robthecomputerguyMemberI just looked through all of the genesis files and it wasn't at all obvious to me where in the world you would edit those files because everything says genesis()
But "customizations" are now forum activities that won't be answered by support....... great! No documentation, broken software, and I have access to less information because everything in a ticket won't be viewable for me to save time and trouble... Just awesome. Why are we using Genesis?
robthecomputerguyMemberI mean the plugin itself, from within the dashboard....? Maybe there's a readme file? Something?? oy.
robthecomputerguyMemberThat plugin doesn't give you instructions? Yeah the template pack didn't work for me either, I was told it wasn't recoded for the new version of the theme, and I ended up purchasing BuddyBoss - it's actually really nice but not responsive, and I have a lot of iPad and iPhone users for that installation.
robthecomputerguyMemberTo clarify, you're not using the GenesisConnect add-on for BuddyPress, right?
I think that tutorial is going to be very hard to follow and then match up to corresponding Genesis components, especially now that the news theme is responsive - that tutorial seems to be covering a basic theme structure.
I would suggest you try using this plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/
Having done this before, and given up entirely - even with the genesis connect - I don't necessarily guarantee that's an easy resolution, but I do think it will get you further than you would if you followed the tutorial.
I have mixed results with the BP forums but they would definitely help with any third party theme, and Genesis is obviously popular.
(I guess what I'm trying to say above all else is to keep looking around there are more resources that will help you further along.)
