It would be helpful to get step by step how to replicate the demo page.
After you import the unzipped xml, then what?
IMO the Studiopress support trail ends there. Also, the demo page (actually most page demos) as is portrayed is inside a much larger whitespace field. You can almost see the entire page without scrolling.
How is that done?
Thanks
http://www.securitytechmaster.comFebruary 17, 2015 at 6:43 pm #141148LeifParticipantI know it was a couple of weeks for me before I realized I could scroll down the http://my.studiopress.com/ page where I found a whole section of resources. Call it below the fold. So I'm really not being condescending when I ask if you've already logged into your StudioPress account and checked out the tutorial http://my.studiopress.com/tutorials/import-demo-content/.
If so, is there something specific that's not happening the way you want it to go? At what point during the import do things go awry for you?
February 17, 2015 at 9:13 pm #141156timothywMemberthanks for replying.
is the page supposed to look like the demo after importing the xml?
Then disassemble it item by item to better understand how it works
mine didn't.
is there a way to uninstall the xml?
where are the contents of the xml?
when I imported there was a list but it is gone?also did part 2 of my question make any sense?
Thanks again.
February 18, 2015 at 5:21 am #141182LeifParticipantYes. For the most part your sample theme should match the demo. Any text widgets will have to be manually populated along with the eNews and Social Icons widgets. You may also have to use you own pic for the first post.
Did you use the WordPress Importer plugin to import the xml? The xml file contains the posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags from the demo. If the imported xml file can be uninstalled, I wouldn't know how to do it. You have to go to each of those sections in WordPress and bulk delete them. Or create a new database and install WP + Gen all over again.
Once the xml file is imported, check your posts, categories, tags, and pages to see if everything is there. Then make sure the plugins used in the sample theme are installed and activated. From there, it's just a matter of going down the tutorial and completing the steps.
Not sure what you mean about whitespace on the demo page. The sample theme, under 'Reading Settings' or 'Static Front Page' in the theme Customizer, is set to 'Front Page displays: Latest Posts'. So if you are trying to edit the Page named 'Home' you won't see anything (unless you've put something there). Maybe that's what you are seeing? There's more about this in the Codex http://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_a_Static_Front_Page
February 18, 2015 at 8:52 am #141199timothywMemberI'm going to respond to your questions below. Let me mention that I did this on top of the website I have been sandboxing for a few months. I asked studiopress if I should archive my existing css.style and functions.php and reinstall the framework and sample theme and was told it would not be necessary.
my site is not hopeless, but I still do not have a strong enough understanding of WP so I wanted to try installing them dismantling the demo theme. For the most part your sample theme should match the demo. I'm not sure I understand this process

I have lots of media files and pages already

yes

I'll take a look I do not know what those items are exactly so it is hard to verify if they are all present

I definitely have the plugins

when you view the themes in appearance>Themes, they are should in a row, or rows, and the page container is smaller than the whole frame. My pages extend out to the edge of the screen and are not within a container. I am having trouble articulating!

I will work with what you've suggested and see if I am able to gain a better understanding of what is going on! thanks for your thoughtful and thorough responses!

this is what i was trying to describe about the blank area. in this case the whitespace is green
February 18, 2015 at 3:08 pm #141242LeifParticipantAhh. I was assuming you were dealing with a fresh install of WP+Gen+Sample...
- By 'manually populating' the text widgets, I mean to say that you'll have to type or copy/paste in some information for the widget to show up in the sidebar. For the Social Share Icons you'll have to enter in a facebook url for the icon to show up, etc.
- An example of something that would've been imported with the demo content is the post on the front page called "Sample Post With Threaded Comments". In 'All Posts' look for a post with that title. Same with Categories, you should see 'Category #1' etc. This will give you an idea if the content was imported correctly.
- The rows of themes you see in Appearance>>Themes are images generated by the 'screenshot.png' file in the child theme folder. The Sample theme's image size should be 880x660
If you haven't already, try disabling all the plugins then reactivating them one at a time to see if there's a conflict causing issues. Otherwise, if it were me at this point, I would most likely set up a new database/WP install on my computer (local dev site using XAMPP, WAMP or MAMP) or subdomain and start fresh to make sure I'm doing it right. That process will oftentimes reveal where things went wrong.
If you haven't already, go ahead and install a developer tool, like Firebug, for your browser to help you pinpoint what's going on. Let me know what happens.
February 19, 2015 at 1:21 pm #141355timothywMemberThankyou for the thoughtful and thorough response.
I will explore your many suggestions.I am familiar with Firebug and the Chrome and IE equivalents of it.
I have something called InstantWP on my PC as well for sandboxing.
As you suggest, I am concerned that by the time I launch the site, I will have tweaked the code so much that it is not viable for further development.
Starting over is an option, but I keep recalling the challenge getting the database going presented me, and not wanting to deliberately going through that again!
Wanting to get the demo going was to serve as a learning tool. Help me to understand what the heck is going on! Apparently I'm not alone in this quest or the only one experiencing difficulties.
Part of the original scope of this site was to sell training and issue completion certificates from the site.
That introduces a lot of complexity to the project, and would probably require I hire a developer. But i think I will instead do my training on Udemy which runs separately, and simplifies the design and set up of my site.
Still a big challenge, but i think attainable to get by (with a little help from my friends)
I have monthly writing & media projects which begin to monopolize my time as my deadline approaches, (like this week), so I stop obsessing on the site to do those to pay my rent.
Of course the goal fore my site will be to also create revenue.
Thanks for your interest and tech support. I have a couple of questions I put out to the forum last night.
I'll keep you updated.
February 19, 2015 at 7:51 pm #141393LeifParticipantYeah, if you're not documenting your changes or using something like GitHub, it's really easy to get lost down those rabbit holes.
I would encourage you to go through it again from the top. Take it slow and take some notes. Maybe even set up a WordPress.com blog to chronicle your journey, upload screenshots, and curate links to the resources you use. Even the database setup becomes routine after the 2nd and 3rd time.
Happy coding!
February 20, 2015 at 12:22 am #141411timothywMemberGreat ideas.
I'll let you know wha happens! -
