The new Genesis update states that the category menu widget is removed and to use custom menus instead. I’m currently using the Eleven40 child theme with a custom menu, but my categories use the drop down menu widget. My site is http://allgaragefloors.com. I’m I correct in assuming that I no longer can use the category drop down widget after I update? Or will the child theme be affected by the update? If I lose the drop down widget, do I need to use the primary or secondary menu nav instead?
Thanks, I’m just a little confused.April 11, 2013 at 9:34 pm #34911
Yes, your site will be affected.
Yes, you are correct you can no longer use the widget.
You don’t use either the primary or secondary menus – unless menus by those names contain your categories. Instead, you create a custom menu using the categories you want to appear, and you use the custom menu widget to place that menu where you previously had a category widget.
Hope that helps.

Just to clarify my earlier comment: the change to the category widget mentioned in the Genesis update notice is not something that is new in 1.9.2 – it’s a change that already took place previously. If you’re running Genesis 1.9.1, you probably already dealt with this change. Because the changelog puts all of the 1.9 changes in one block, one might think all the changes listed are 1.9.2. You have to scroll a little down to see the 5 bullet points for 1.9.2.

Thanks for clearing up how to create a new custom category menu in a widget, but now I’m confused about your last post. I’m currently running the Eleven40 child theme off Genesis 1.9.1 yet I still have the category widget. If I update the Genesis frame work to 1.9.2 will I lose it then or will it still be there?April 12, 2013 at 8:39 am #34987
The “Category” widget is a standard WP widget, similar to Calendar. These are controlled by WP updates.
Genesis widgets start with “Genesis”, as in “Genesis – Featured Page”. The Genesis update notes only refer to the widgets that start with “Genesis”.
Of course, other plugins can add widgets, and as you activate/deactivate those plugins, your widgets will come and go.
