Hello,
I'm new to StudioPress & Genesis. I previously had a theme installed on my site that didn't adhere to any framework, so any additional features had to be installed via plugins. Security is a major concern for me. I hate having to deal with the aftermath of a hack attempt of some sort. Previously, I had 3 security related plugins installed:
Bad Behaviour - Deny automated spambots access to your PHP-based Web site.
Better WP Security - Helps protect your WordPress installation from attackers. Hardens standard WordPress security by hiding vital areas of your site, protecting access to important files via htaccess, preventing brute-force login attempts, detecting attack attempts, and more.
Bulletproof Security - Website Security Protection: BulletProof Security protects your website against XSS, RFI, CRLF, CSRF, Base64, Code Injection and SQL Injection hacking attempts. One-click .htaccess WordPress security protection. Protects wp-config.php, bb-config.php, php.ini, php5.ini, install.php and readme.html with .htaccess security protection. Security Logging. HTTP Error Logging. One-click Website Maintenance Mode (HTTP 503). Additional website security checks: DB errors off, file and folder permissions check... System Info: PHP, MySQL, OS, Server, Memory Usage, IP, SAPI, DNS, Max Upload... Built-in .htaccess file editing, uploading and downloading.
There was a little overlap, but they all had certain things they did best.
My question is, do I still need these (or other) security plugins or does Genesis cover all the bases as far as that's concerned?
Also, outside of security, what plugins are generally recommended that make up for any features not included in the Genesis framework? For example, in the demo for my current theme (Agency), the Contact page stated:
* This contact form was developed with a third party plugin called Gravity Forms and is not included in the Genesis Framework. It is for display only here on the demo site – though we highly recommend using it.
So, what else might I need that's generally regarded as "highly recommended"?
Thanks,
Greg

However, as a general rule, unless you can disable specific features in a security plugin, they're hard to use on a mix and match basis. And since they are used by almost all traffic to hit your site, some of them can add a lot of server load.
As for what else is recommended, that depends on your needs. You can ignore what is generally recommended and only focus on what will best serve your requirements. Therefore, what needs do you have your site? How are you covering them now? Are you willing to consider premium plugins or will you just stick with plugins in the WP repo? There are a lot of plugins out there, and unless you narrow the range of your question considerably, you won't get useful answers.
