I’m changing my photography blog to the modern portfolio theme but cannot get the sidebar showing on the blog page.

    http://dandenong-ranges-photography.com.au/blog/

I do have that template chosen for the blog so it should be showing the left sidebar. And I do have things in the widget section for the sidebar, but it’s not showing up, and I can’t figure out why.  Hoping someone can help. Thanks.

The page is using the full-width setting. You might wanna check the default layout in Genesis theme settings or the page layout setting on the page itself.

That’s always the challenge – never just one place to change these things.

So, I need to change it there but then it will change all my other pages? I want to be able to choose one for the blog page but have different for other pages? I thought that’s why we could do that on the individual pages?

You can set the universal default via Genesis theme settings. Then, on a per page basis, you can override this setting. Hope that clears things up a bit.

Thanks ModernMuse.  I’ve been fine on other themes but finding this one a challenge. Determined to get it working how I want it.

I’m afraid that hasn’t worked as I wanted it. The blog page now has the sidebar but so has all the other pages. In the about page I don’t want the sidebar and I’ve got the layout selected on that page to be without sidebars and updated it, but it’s still showing with a sidebar.

So I’m stuck now as I’m not sure what to do.

Sorry, I don’t know what to tell you. It might have something to do with the page templates created by the theme author. I’m not familiar with the theme, so I’d have to see your theme’s files to be sure.

Since I’ve replied to this post, you may want to submit a new post asking your question to see if another designer can pick it up and give you further guidance.

I don’t understand why I need to submit a new post? Is this because no-one else will look at it because it’s had responses?  I don’t know how the system works here if that’s the case.

    Kathie,

Hello. I was reading through this thread and testing some things out on my development environment as to why this is not working. I went through the same steps as your, but could not get the sidebar to move to the left while using the blog template. Although I am not using the same theme as you, I was still coming across the same issue.

I decided to create a new page called ‘Test’ (or whatever you want it to be) and set the sidebar to the left on the options while creating the page.

I then went to the WordPress Settings -> Reading and set the Blog page to the page I just created. This set the sidebar to the left on my blog page.

I will have to look into this more later when I have time to see why the sidebar is always to the right.

This may or may not help your issue, but that is my two cents.

    Hi Kathie,

Most people looking to answer forum questions start out by looking for posts with no reply. Your odds of getting another designer to help are better if you have a new post with zero replies.

That being said, I’m glad Ryan was able to chime in. :)

Thanks, both of you. Do you think this is a theme issue or a WordPress issue?

I had thought that with fresh new responses this thread would show up as something that was continuing which is how most forums work.  Well, the ones I hang around anyway. Unless designers are only specifically looking at threads that have no responses?

Because it’s not obvious where to find the threads with no replies (unless you look in the FAQ section) I expect many here wouldn’t know where those threads are?  Unless you mean most designers?

At any rate, I appreciate your responses and hope that someone comes up with an answer. I have been in touch with Nick from support as well since I couldn’t find an answer here yesterday and he is looking for ideas on what could be causing it.

Found the problem. Nick responded overnight (my time) and suggested I deactivate all my plugins and put them back on a few at a time.  I reset the theme and individual page layout and checked the site. It all was how I wanted it. So then I put on a few at a time and it was working fine, right till the very last plugin and then it went awry again.

It is a plugin I was using for a previous theme and don’t need for this one so will delete it but have notified Nick and will contact the plugin developer to let them know too, as it looks like there must be an incompatibility between the two. It’s probably rare and unlikely that anyone would be using the same plugin on this theme I expect as they wouldn’t be installing the plugin to use on this theme.

Thanks again, both of you for your assistance in helping me and I appreciate Nick’s time too.

Me too. I’d put a bit of time into this one and didn’t want to have to start again… at least not for a while :-)

This one can be marked as resolved now – don’t think I can do it at my end. Thank you.
