Hummm can you install the Jetpack plugin with Synthesis? Is it available to you? If it is, the Custom CSS is available in the Jetpack.

I absolutely love Easy Digital Downloads plugin just for this. It’s very easy to use. I’ve done several WooCommerce sites but if you only want to do digital downloads, I think EDD is what I would select.
You don’t need anything with a lot of bells and whistles to it. I did a music artist website with the 411 theme – http://my.studiopress.com/themes/the-411/#demo-full. This might be just what you need for the amount of content you want to present.
If you are familiar with using the editor, you can ask them to add it back for you. They seem to be pretty good with that if you are a developer.

Open up the functions and look for the image sizes. Look for 380, change to 120. See how that takes effect. You may have to regenerate the thumbnails to resize images.
Or you can make a copy of the landing page, call it splash for example, add the navs back in.
Modern Portfolio has a landing page template. If you open it up, you should see where the Navs were “removed”. You can add those back and use a static landing page as your home page.
