My client's site is being designed by engineers, they do not want it to be responsive, they want the whole site to shrink to whatever screen size is being used. I'm using Genesis Frameworks, and for starters have commented out the @media only section of code. Obviously that's not enough, the site is still responding as though it's responsive, the menu is going into multiple lines, header bar is rearranging itself, etc.
What else do I need to do to make the site shrink instead of moving around as the screen size shrinks?

You likely just need to remove the "viewport" line from your functions.php file to finish making it un-responsive. http://my.studiopress.com/snippets/head/

And yes, I warned the client about Google and the ranking, they are totally unconcerned. What they want is to copy this site: http://www.chapagency.com/index.html in how it resizes. They are also young and have great eyesight.

I recommend working even harder to get them to see all the problems with their current approach...and remind them that they hired you as the designer to ensure that they get a web site that actually works.
When I view that site on my iPhone, it's very hard to read. Let them know that this is the equivalent of putting up a roadblock to keep people out of their "store."
It's only a matter of time until they start getting complaints from potential customers or realize they're losing business because of an impossible-to-read web site.

I was told in very certain terms that they wanted the site to just shrink, they do NOT want the menu to fold into separate lines, they don't depend on Google for getting new clients, and that everyone has the technology now to just enlarge the screen where they want to read it.
I get tired of banging my head on the wall, so I just give them what they want. When they get the complaints from their customers, they can come back to get it done right, at a higher price. This is one of those PITA clients, designing by committee. Vent over! ha!
May 21, 2015 at 6:53 pm #153171SusanModeratorIt might be easier to modify a non-responsive theme to give them the look they want, than to try to reinvent the wheel 🙂
May 21, 2015 at 7:01 pm #153172Lauren @ OnceCoupledMemberSusan might be right. You've got some percentage widths in there, and some max-widths. Those are going to cause the site to respond to the browser. You'd need to go through and pull out all percentage widths, and change all
max-width
s to justwidth
s.
