I'm very much just starting with the WP platform and decided to dive right into Genesis as a framework. It's been a little frustrating, but also really exciting.
My Site: http://richardspencer.net
Demo Site: http://demo.studiopress.com/modern-portfolio/I originally started out with just the Genesis Sample Theme, but I decided the Modern Portfolio Pro theme was a perfect fit for me to start with as it would at least offer the very minimum of features I feel like my small portfolio would need.
I set up the theme per the instructions of the file, and my home page looks pretty much just how I'd expect. It's got no real content, but the structure is right. From there, it goes downhill.
1.) The navigation links up top don't scroll down to the section on the home page they are referring to when clicked, the way they do in the sample.
2.) I'm not sure I understand what a "Landing Page" is and how it works, as seen when you click on the "Hire me now" button in the sample. From what I can tell the landing page has no navigational elements, and I'm not sure why that would be intentional.
3.) clicking the portfolio placeholder images on the home page brings me to the appropriate portfolio category post, but does not show the image with the text.
4.) clicking a link on my home page navigation such as "portfolio" brings me to the portfolio page with a redundant extra navigation bar.
There are a bunch of other observations and questions I had, but that's where I'm at for now. Thanks for all the help.

If you look at the demo, the Portfolio link is http://demo.studiopress.com/modern-portfolio/#portfolio. On your site, you created actual pages: http://richardspencer.net/portfolio/
2. It is intentional for landing pages not to have navigation links. Landing pages are used within the realm of marketing and advertising. Think of a landing page as being a standalone web page distinct from your main website that has been designed for a single focused objective. There are 2 basic types of landing page, Click Through and Lead Generation.
3. You need to add the image to your content. The image on the home page is the featured image. You also need to insert the image into your content.
4. Your menu is setup as the primary menu and you also have the menu inserted into the header right widget area. Uncheck primary menu on the appearance/menu page.

I can't believe how obvious number three was.
