How to Use Google Web Fonts With Your Genesis-Powered Website

Brian Gardner on June 28, 2011

There is a lot of buzz going on these days with web design and custom fonts – and more than likely you’ve seen some typography that you’d die to have on your site. Some of these are paid fonts, which you might want not want to spend money on.

Google Comes to the Rescue

Google Web Fonts lets you browse all the fonts available via the Google Web Fonts API. All fonts in the directory are available for use on your website under an open source license and are served by Google servers.

And they are free. That’s great news, right?

How to Use the Icon Set for Bloggers

Brian Gardner on June 23, 2011

As part of our free web graphics section of the blog, we recently released an Icon Set for Bloggers. In the comments of that post, folks asked us if we’d explain how to use them into a theme.

Easy to Implement with the Genesis Framework

If you are running any of your sites on the Genesis Framework, using the icon set for bloggers is quite simple – and only requires a few steps.

First, let’s take a look at where the icon set for bloggers can even be used. There are two sections within the Genesis Framework where you can utilize these fine graphics – the post info section, and the post meta section.

Genesis Framework v1.6 Now Available

Brian Gardner on April 26, 2011

We’ve been working on Genesis 1.6 for a over two months now, and we had it in beta for 3 weeks. This version includes a number of features that integrate seamlessly with WordPress and also fixes some bugs. Below you’ll see what’s been included…

Footer Widgets

Recent themes, like Venture, Focus, and even Prose, have been using this feature for a long time now. But unfortunately, they had to do things the old way, the hard way. With Genesis 1.6, this gets SO much easier. Now, all you need is 1 line of code in the theme’s functions.php file, and a little CSS (which we’ll be happy to build into many of our themes).

Learn how to add footer widgets with Genesis v1.6.

Genesis Framework v1.5 Now Available

Brian Gardner on February 9, 2011

We’ve been quietly working on Genesis 1.5 for a while now, and we had it in beta for a week now. This is not a very big release – but it does, however, tie up some loose ends, adds some useful new features, and fix some bugs. Below you’ll see what’s been included…

Rewritten Style Sheet

We have taken a lot of time and worked with our development community to rewritte the default Style Sheet. After all, you’re not really supposed to be using Genesis itself, right? True, but keep in mind that many people use the main Genesis Style Sheet as a starting point for their own child themes, just as we do here internally. So we felt like an update might be in order. It now includes a table of contents, sections which are clearly commented, and consolidated styles and definitions. We think you’ll like it.

Genesis Grid Loop

Sites like ChrisBrogan.com required custom code to accomplish that left-right grid loop on the homepage, so we thought it’d be a good idea to build the function that does the heavy lifting into core, add some useful parameters, and make it official. This feature is really simple to use and only requires a few lines of code. In fact, we’ve already got a child theme with the grid loop almost ready to release. In the meantime, you can learn How to Use the Genesis Grid Loop.

Genesis Framework v1.4 Now Available

Nathan Rice on November 17, 2010

Since its conception over one year ago, Genesis has always been about offering valuable features, while at the same time allowing maximum control through the use of intelligent Theme Settings, liberal use of action hooks and filters, and semantic markup. This is our driving passion, and today, Genesis 1.4 proves yet again that it is the only framework you’ll ever need.

This release has a little something for everyone. It offers more control to developers who use Genesis to run their development business; it offers more SEO control for professional publishers; and it offers increased flexibility for bloggers and casual users too!

Ready to talk specifics? Let’s do it …

Brian Gardner on June 16, 2010

Genesis Theme Framework – version 1.2 is now available! We’ve been working on this release for a while now, and we’re SO excited to finally release it, alongside WordPress 3.0, a landmark update to the Genesis Theme Framework.

We’ve made it dead-simple to upgrade via our 1-click automatic update feature (since v1.1), so we highly recommend that you upgrade to WordPress 3.0 AND Genesis 1.2. You’ll be happy you did! Of course, our first priority with Genesis 1.2 was integrating the new WordPress 3.0 features into Genesis. The most exciting new feature is …

WordPress 3.0 Custom Menus

Among the minor bug fixes and enhancements, there are two main features that Genesis v1.2 includes. First, and foremost – Genesis’ navigation is seamlessly integrated with the new WordPress 3.0 custom navigation feature. By default, Genesis will register it’s two menu locations – primary and secondary navigation. You can see an example of the custom menu page below:
